How VA Math Works

The VA uses a "whole person" theory. Disabilities are not simply added together. Instead, each rating is applied to the remaining "healthy" percentage:Example: 50% + 30% is not 80%. Start with 100% healthy. 50% of 100 = 50% disabled. Then 30% of the remaining 50% = 15%. Combined = 50% + 15% = 65%, rounded to 70%.Bilateral factor: When the same disability affects both sides (e.g., both knees), the VA combines those ratings first, then adds a 10% bonus before merging with other conditions.
